This book contains a wide variety of articles that were written by James McElhaney for the American Bar Association’s Litigation journal over the years. He dispenses a tremendous amount of wisdom collected from his own experience and that of other lawyers.
McElhaney covers almost every conceivable subject for the trial lawyer. What I particularly enjoyed is that there are ninety chapters that are easily accessible because they are usually only six or seven pages long. For instance, he has an enlightening chapter on trial practice that every lawyer must read. He covers the following: how to keep the client happy, getting rid of cases you have that have turned out "to be dogs," how to get along with judges, trying to settle cases, and deciding when it is time to leave your firm. In short, this book is filled with superb tips, anecdotes, and many war stories that make the pages turn very quickly.
This book was suggested to my Advanced Trial and Evidence class in lawschool. I decided to pick up a copy to see if it would really be worthwhile for my future practice since I want to litigate. It is excellent from what I have read so far. Many of us were shown or told how to do or say certain things in pretrial and trial litigation class. This book is not only a good reminder, but it has many other practical and entertaining ideas that I’m sure to use in my future practice. A "must have!"

About the Author
W. Paul Vogtis Emeritus Professor of Research Methods and Evaluation at Illinois State University where he won both teaching and research awards. He specializes in methodological choice and program evaluation and is particularly interested in ways to integrate multiple methods. His other books include: Tolerance & Education: Learning to Live with Diversity and Difference (Sage Publications, 1998); Quantitative Research Methods for Professionals (Allyn & Bacon, 2007); Education Programs for Improving Intergroup Relations (coedited with Walter Stephan, Teachers College Press, 2004). He is also editor of four 4-volume sets in the series, Sage Benchmarks in Social Research Methods: Selecting Research Methods (2008); Data Collection (2010); Quantitative Research Methods (2011); and, with Burke Johnson, Correlation and Regression Analysis (2012).His most recent publications include the coauthored When to Use What Research Design (2012) and Selecting the Right Analyses for Your Data: Quantitative, Qualitative, and Mixed Methods Approaches (2014).
Burke Johnson is a professor in the Professional Studies Department at the University of South Alabama. To quote the briefest chapter, the one that would surely catch your eye if you picked it off a shelf and skimmed through it: "My mother is a fish."
As with his stunning _The_Sound_and_the_Fury_ and _Absalom_Absalom_, this book makes use of the author’s masterful use of stream-of-conscious writing to render an entire reality with internal monologues. The story unfolds as you construct it from the observations and responses of the characters. Though briefer and less challenging than these other two books, it’s as absorbing a read as they have been for decades. When you reach the end, you can imagine that you’ll pick up the book again someday, sure there’s more to explore.
The structure is simple once you get the hang of it. Each chapter is the name of a particular character in the story of the family of Addie Bundren, dead in the first few pages, and being transported by her clan to the land of her birth for burial-by wagon, in the heat and dust, over rivers, for weeks, before the vacuum seal… There is no "Once upon a time." Instead, whatever that character is thinking at the instant the chapter begins is what you’re reading. Soon, you know who everyone is and what she thinks of everyone else. The effect of this structure is that you can inhabit the narrative as each of the players, can see how events are interpreted differently. It’s also like a mystery-someone will have troubled thoughts about something you can’t quite distinguish; then, twenty pages later, you figure out what they’ve been talking about and you flip backward in a frenzy to see how the early references to the issue flesh out the story. This is a terribly rewarding way of reading.
This is a great first Faulkner for everyone.
Faulkner’s great accomplishment in this novel is to use the most modern fiction techniques to create a timeless allegory that we would probably not accept in a different style. His other great achievement is to leave so much space in the story for us to participate in adding meaning. You have to pay attention to even notice what is going on, and then you can provide a variety of interpretations. This novel will never be the same for any two readers. It is a stunning accomplishment, as a result.
The story begins as Addie Bundren lays dying, fanned by her daughter, while her son makes her coffin. With her husband and five children, we make her acquaintance by learning about their actions and characters. Only once does she have a role as a narrator, and then, quite late in the story.
Her husband, Anse, has promised her that he will bury her with her family. Because of tremendous rains, the river has risen, knocking out bridges and making passage difficult. Despite this, the family perserveres in taking her unembalmed body to the intended burial site. Along the way, there are many mishaps and the family is burdened in many ways by keeping this promise. As the burial comes closer, new elements of the story are exposed and develop that totally recast what you have thought was going on. On the very last page (don’t read it first!) is such a plot reversal as only a short story writer would normally have dared.
The story is a difficult one to read. So read this book when you have time to pay close attention and study the text word by word. Let me explain the difficulties you will encounter. First, the voices in the book use a Southern patois that will be unfamiliar to most. This is the language of the rural poor in the 1930s, which few have heard.
I was re-reading this book last week, pen and highlighter in hand, when my husband walked into the living room and said, "What are you reading?" I lifted the cover. "Is it any good?" To which I replied, "No," and he responded, "Why are you reading it?" And, slightly irritated, I said, "For the same reason you are watching the American Idol Audition show. It’s DEFINITELY not good, but you can’t look away."
And so it is with most of Faulkner’s work. As a reader, you should not go into his work expecting anything "good." You won’t find an easy or clear plotline, clear language, or (and this is USUALLY a major gripe of mine) likeable characters. But even though you don’t really like what you are reading, you just have to know how it ends. You have to know what makes these reprehensible people tick. And, surprisingly enough, you are usually unsatisfied in the end, but not so much that you don’t want to double back and have one more look at the car-wreck that is the work of Faulkner.
And so it is with *As I Lay Dying*. It’s a fascinating piece of work, masterfully crafted, ultimately depressing, and darkly funny all at once. Having been to Rowan Oak a few times, I can see Faulkner sitting in his front garden chuckling over the idea of Vardaman’s infamous "My Mother is a fish," chapter and how it captivated the world with it’s "brilliance."
I also have no doubt, having grown up in Mississippi, that he was writing about real people, warts and all. I’m probably related to some of them. Maybe for that reason, Faulkner reads a little differently to locals. While I certainly appreciate his literary genius, the truth and realism of what he wrote also shines through.

Most Emanuel outlines are amazing if keyed to your casebook. This means the supplement follows along with your casebook and case readings. It has a condensed overview outline at the beginning, followed by more in depth coverage with cases and book notes. Unlike other Emanuel outlines, this does not contain checklists/flowcharts after each topic. However, it does have some issue spotting tips after each chapter and practice hypos at the end. Out of all of my supplements, this was indeed the most useful for class prep and outlining. However for practice and a more in-depth explanation other supplements are necessary. CrunchTime Property 2009 (The Crunchtime Series) is essentially a non-keyed version of this book, minus the in-depth outline, so the full, keyed outline is definitely worth the extra money.
I used various supplements for this class. Before buying all of them, I would go to your law library and look them over, use them for your class and see which work best for you. My biggest mistake was thinking by using supplements I would learn less or get screwed up. Professors tell you whether they like supplements or not, but if you use them to prepare for class, still at least go through the cases and take NOTES from what professors say, you will do far better.

Most Emanuel outlines are amazing if keyed to your casebook. This means the supplement follows along with your casebook and case readings. It has a condensed overview outline at the beginning, followed by more in depth coverage with cases and book notes. Unlike other Emanuel outlines, this does not contain checklists/flowcharts after each topic. However, it does have some issue spotting tips after each chapter and practice hypos at the end. Out of all of my supplements, this was indeed the most useful for class prep and outlining. However for practice and a more in-depth explanation other supplements are necessary. CrunchTime Property 2009 (The Crunchtime Series) is essentially a non-keyed version of this book, minus the in-depth outline, so the full, keyed outline is definitely worth the extra money.
I used various supplements for this class. Before buying all of them, I would go to your law library and look them over, use them for your class and see which work best for you. My biggest mistake was thinking by using supplements I would learn less or get screwed up. Professors tell you whether they like supplements or not, but if you use them to prepare for class, still at least go through the cases and take NOTES from what professors say, you will do far better.

Baldwin dissects the nature of Black-White relations in the early sixties. He rejects the both the pandering of White liberals and the separatist rhetoric of Black radicals as simplistic; the former as condescending and insincere and the latter as unrealistic and reactionary. The conclusion that he reaches is that Blacks and Whites, whether they realize it or not, are locked in a symbiotic relationship, and destruction for one will mean destruction for both. Put positively, however, the key to their salvations are linked. No one is free until all are free.
Baldwin focuses on two important anecdotes. The first deals with his seduction by the church, his brief career as a child minister, and his subsequent rejection of Christianity. The second deals with an encounter with Elijah Muhammad, then leader of the Nation of Islam. Both show religion as an escape mechanism, and both are told with a convincing immediacy and a sense of candor.
Baldwin’s rejection of Christianity appears to be a crucial step in his awakening, and in his rejection of the beliefs that 60’s White society expected Black people to hold. The church for Baldwin was an escape mechanism, but having been consoled he soon fled the church, overwhelmed by its hypocrisy and abuses, both historical and current. He concludes "…
James Baldwin caused quite a stir in 1961 when he published "Letter from a Region in My Mind" in The New Yorker, followed by "A Letter to My Nephew" in The Progressive the next month. He collected these two essays in this small volume, and it’s considered (along with "Notes of a Native Son") his best work. His biting, heartfelt analysis on race relations flings its barbs equally at the legacy of American white supremacy and the duplicity of liberal white guilt; although it was written more than forty years ago, it reminds us both how far we’ve come and how far we have yet to go.
Baldwin frames his observations around two thematically related biographical episodes: his brief three-year stint as an adolescent Pentecostal preacher in Harlem in the early 1940s and his journalistic visit to the headquarter of the Nation of Islam in Chicago’s South Side twenty years later. Both institutions, Baldwin finds, suffer from an ambivalent myopia: Christianity in general "helped to protect and sanctify the power that was so ruthlessly being used by people who were indeed seeking a city, but not one in the heavens, and one to be made, very definitely, by captive hands"; the Nation of Islam "inculcated in the demoralized Negro population a truer and more individual sense of its own worth" through the "fearful paradox" of creating a hopeful future with "an invented past." Blacks, he seems to say, have traded in the belief system forced on them by their oppressors to a understandable longing for an illusory past. His conclusion is aggressive but perceptive: "the Negro has been formed by this nation, for better or for worse, and does not belong to any other–not to Africa, and certainly not to Islam.

I have used this book in all four of its editions so far. It is adaptable to be part of an undergraduate business law/legal environment class, or upper level course in Environmental Law and Ethics, or an MBA or law school course where the goal is to show the foundations of environmental law and policy, the basic structure of the main laws and regulations built on them, and the evolving case law and policy questions. A useful teacher’s manual and end of chapter questions make it work well in a variety of settings. I have most recently used it as a reference tool and foundation for a senior college course largely participated in by retirees involved in local environmental groups and land trusts here in Maine. If you have an interest, I would also recommend "Environmental Law Stories" which devotes chapters to specific historical classic cases, and the parties and interests involved in each. I expect with the current Congressional efforts to defund the EPA and undermine the new Clean Water Rule, and pending litigation on that rule and EPA efforts to address climate change under the Clean Air Act, in the face of Congressional inability to face reality on this subject, that a fifth edition of this book will be forthcoming soon, and need to be updated almost immediately. I read an OpEd piece in the NYTimes by the author and was intrigued by his deep insights. I purchased the eBook thru and never regretted it. I’ve read many books on Buddhism, philosophy, mysticism, etc. This one stands out above the rest because it masterfully blends psychology and Buddhism so that the insights into both disciplines come forth one surprising chapter after another. I can’t say enough about this volume for its analysis of Buddha’s path to enlightenment. It opened my eyes to the areas of his life that have been clouded over by generation of commentators (enlightened and not). I am referring to the trauma of his early motherless existence, the trauma of that experience, and the psychological strains Gautama underwent (and conquered) during his years of physical deprivation and denial. It deepened my understanding of why Buddhism provides such subtle psychological tools to assimilate and overcome the daily (and extraordinary) trauma of just living. I’ve recommended this book to Buddhist teachers and they have been equally impressed with this book.
Impressive, insightful, well-reasoned book, which is filled with poignant (as well as some trite) stories! Neverless, the book is too focused on our stories and our obsessions with them. In typical psychotherapist fashion, the book unfolds as though insight into our history and stories is the answer to our problems even though some key insights in the book indicate otherwise. The book devotes so much to our cognition of our histories and our reconsolidation of memories in a less dissociative manner that it basically ignores how one establishes the mode for holding and remembering our experiences in a way which makes such restructuring possible. Thus, while the book cleverly establishes parallels between pyschotherapy based particularly on modern knowledge of child development and the Buddha’s teachings, the book nearly totally ignores hugely important aspects of the Buddha’s teachings about what must be cultivated in ourselves to make such things possible. Instead, the book briefly states that the Buddha found a method to cultivate balance and equilibrium that is receptive to pent-up feelings and repressed memories which need be aired and resolved for our wellbeing. The method is left unexplained and glossed-over, which might explain why the author joyfully gives an account of a well-adjusted client having a minor but healthful insight who continues to be a patient for well more than a decade! The book falls back on the classic western approach of attempting to "grasp" and rationally solve the problem, here one of suffering. Wonder why we are out of touch? "Life Inside the Bubble" by Dan Bongino is the story about a man who went from being a cop and secret agent, to eventually completely abandoning his career and embarking upon the dark water of policy.
Dan Bongino started his career as member of NY Police Department, in his home city where he was raised since he was born in Queens.
Although he grew up modestly, from the start of his career he gradually started ascending the hierarchy by successful realization of his tasks, gaining greater and more important jobs that eventually led him to become a member of elite Presidential Protective Division in White House.
Because of all the things he experienced while working as secret agent, together with his own beliefs he decided to leave a long career in which he was successful.
Instead he resigned from the Secret Service in 2011 and decided to enter into uncertain world of politics, running for the United States Senate against the Democrats.
In his book he described his entire life so far, not neglecting any period, speaking about his childhood, time he spent in NYPD, the stories about him becoming Secret Service agent and time he spent working there.
And though I guess that due to his political beliefs, the book (as well as this review) will be probably a priori rejected from all those who think differently, I suggest that you dedicate some time and even if you think otherwise give it a chance (at least borrowing it from your local library).
The book is decently written and provides some information that would be of interest to every American citizen.
I was lucky enough to receive a copy of this book last week before it hit the shelves. This is a compelling biography about a former Secret Service agent Dan Bongino and his life struggles. Bongino’s story begins in Queens, NY as a child. His family was poor and life was tough. He talks about his time with the NYPD and how he landed a job with the Secrete Service. It’s packed with plenty of stories in between.
Those of you who felt compelled to write a negative review of this book should now go back and actually read it. Don’t pull a Pelosi, it’s so obvious that you never read the book because you don’t know what’s in it.
I per-ordered 3 books for Christmas gifts and will order a few more. Great job Dan Bongino, I can’t wait for the sequel!

This text is ideal for any law student or person wishing to broaden their knowledge on the rules of evidence. This text also contains the California Evidence Code and The Federal Rules of Evidence in the back. Even though this is yet again another expensive and possibly over-priced textbook, the cases and information inside is truly helpful.
I’m not sure "love it" is the right description for a case book; however, this book was well packaged, well delivered, and as described. The book itself really is a great book for an evidence class.
I didn’t choose to buy this book, rather it was required for my Evidence course. I would seriously recommend buying the reading companion from the publisher, the book does not do a great job of explaining the basics of the rules. For instance the section of Character evidence gives a lot of information about how Character evidence has been interpreted in modern law, however there is little simple explanation of what Character Evidence is in minimal detail. In other words the book dives deep into the nitty gritty of subject matter w/o giving the reader a basic understanding of what they have just jumped into. Why Does Izzy Cover Her Ears? Dealing with Sensory Overload is the picturebook story of Izzy, an intelligent young girl just starting the first grade. Izzy has sensory processing disorder, which makes her over-responsive to environmental stimuli, including sounds, accidental bumps from other kids, and visual distractions. Her reflexive tendencies to cry, lash out, or cover her ears have caused other kids to accuse her of being mean, or deride her as a "crybaby". But with help from her parents, her teachers, and an occupational therapist, she is learning how to adjust. She feels calmer and ready to learn, and she’s made a lot of friends! The story is told from Izzy’s point of view, but does not talk down to the reader. A highly recommended and educational book for parents and children to share, especially if the child has sensory processing disorder or knows relatives or friends with it.
George Harrison’s stellar "It’s All Too Much" and the inane classic "Make the World Go Away" which I never liked could easily be the soundtracks for this book.
Izzy is a delightfully plausible character who MIGHT have autism. She plainly has sensory issues, one of which is an aversion for loud noises. They are painful to her, so she will cover her ears regardless of her her environment.
She is a wonderful role model for all children, neurotypical and on the spectrum alike. I wish I’d had this book when I was a child. Show me a person on the spectrum who DOESN’T hate loud noises and surprises and I will show you a buzzard who can dance and a screaming eagle who can sing.
Izzy personifies the sensory overload experience perfectly and George Harrison’s 1968 lyrics "it’s all too much for me to see….it’s all too much for me to take" sum up this story very well.
From beginning to end, I LOVED this wonderful tool for introducing sensory challenges and solutions to kids at such an important age as early elementary school years. Izzy is a wonderful role model for kids who are challenged by their senses. They can see they are not alone and see how she deals with some of her challenges at school. As important, the book provides a wonderful tool to introduce sensory issues and potential sensory overload to classmates to help them better understand their peers who might be dealing with sensory overload. This book has great potential to bridge a gap between classmates by giving a better understanding of what others might be experiencing with regards to sensory issues.

Why Does Izzy Cover Her Ears? Dealing with Sensory Overload is the picturebook story of Izzy, an intelligent young girl just starting the first grade. Izzy has sensory processing disorder, which makes her over-responsive to environmental stimuli, including sounds, accidental bumps from other kids, and visual distractions. Her reflexive tendencies to cry, lash out, or cover her ears have caused other kids to accuse her of being mean, or deride her as a "crybaby". But with help from her parents, her teachers, and an occupational therapist, she is learning how to adjust. She feels calmer and ready to learn, and she’s made a lot of friends! The story is told from Izzy’s point of view, but does not talk down to the reader. A highly recommended and educational book for parents and children to share, especially if the child has sensory processing disorder or knows relatives or friends with it.
George Harrison’s stellar "It’s All Too Much" and the inane classic "Make the World Go Away" which I never liked could easily be the soundtracks for this book.
Izzy is a delightfully plausible character who MIGHT have autism. She plainly has sensory issues, one of which is an aversion for loud noises. They are painful to her, so she will cover her ears regardless of her her environment.
She is a wonderful role model for all children, neurotypical and on the spectrum alike. I wish I’d had this book when I was a child. Show me a person on the spectrum who DOESN’T hate loud noises and surprises and I will show you a buzzard who can dance and a screaming eagle who can sing.
Izzy personifies the sensory overload experience perfectly and George Harrison’s 1968 lyrics "it’s all too much for me to see….it’s all too much for me to take" sum up this story very well.
From beginning to end, I LOVED this wonderful tool for introducing sensory challenges and solutions to kids at such an important age as early elementary school years. Izzy is a wonderful role model for kids who are challenged by their senses. They can see they are not alone and see how she deals with some of her challenges at school. As important, the book provides a wonderful tool to introduce sensory issues and potential sensory overload to classmates to help them better understand their peers who might be dealing with sensory overload. This book has great potential to bridge a gap between classmates by giving a better understanding of what others might be experiencing with regards to sensory issues.
